POLICE last night were hunting two men who forced their way into a New Plymouth house and bashed a man when he returned home from work.
The 52-year-old victim was beaten with an iron bar and left on his bed, tied hand and foot, during the attack on Monday afternoon.
The two men made their getaway in the victim's borrowed Nissan Terrano 4WD. It was found three hours later dumped in a paddock at Lepperton.
Last night the two men were still at large, with a team of seven CIB detectives asking for the public's assistance to help track them down.
Officer in charge, Detective Sergeant Greg Gray, said the victim of the home invasion had come home from work about 4.30pm on Monday to find the two masked robbers inside his Rawhiti St, Vogeltown, home where he lives alone.

"When they have not got the answers they wanted, the victim has been hit around the body with what we believe to be an iron bar or similar," he said.
The two left, helping themselves to the 1995 Nissan Terrano which the victim had borrowed from friends.
The man had managed to struggle enough to loosen the bindings and free himself. He then replica hublot watches contacted a friend who contacted police.
The victim was treated in hospital for head and arm injuries. He is recovering with friends.
"The victim is obviously still affected and suffering the effects of the physical attack and the emotional effects as well," Mr Gray said.
Descriptions of the two robbers were of little use because they had gone to some length to disguise their appearance, Mr Gray said.
"Hopefully, forensic examination of the house and the vehicle may give some leads."
While a small amount of property appeared to have been stolen, police were yet to return home with the victim to check links of london if anything else had gone, he said.
The victim had spent much of the day at the police station helping with the investigation.
The Terrano was found about 8pm on Monday and appeared to be undamaged.
Anyone who saw the Terrano between Rawhiti St and Cross Rd between 5pm and 8pm was asked to contact police.
Police are also asking people who were seen in the Waitara Rd- Cross Rd area shortly before 8pm on Monday night to come forward.
The three or four people were with two cars described as a four- door blue Ford Laser hatchback and a red or maroon hatchback which had its bonnet up.
